Features:

The popular How It Works: Steam tour is back for October, with new artifacts and experiences. Learn how steam is made, controlled, and used, from the earliest industrial applications through the present day. The tour will spot light the boilers, engines, steam hammer, whistles, and even steam apparatus hidden in the steel mill models in the Museum, going beyond the regular tour to show visitors the details of how each piece functions. Unique to this tour will be a look at the newly acquired 1842 model “beam” engine that was exhibited next to the giant Corliss at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Weather permitting, the tour will also visit the Museum’s outdoor lot where a pair of stationary steam engines will be operated under compressed air. Admission for the “How It Works” tours is $5 in addition to regular museum admission.
