Learn how iron and steel is not only made, but made America by becoming an integral ingredient in the success of practically every industry. This tour will take a deep dive into the iron and steel gallery artifacts, breaking down the integrated steel making process into a multitude of shops, jobs, and machines, while explaining how those elements changed over time. A special feature of this tour will be a carpool to the Museum’s climate controlled storage facility for a look at a trio of cutaway industrial models that showcase the inner workings of a coke plant, blast furnace, and open hearth furnace. The National Museum of Industrial History “How It Works” series of tours are designed to help patrons further understand of specific facets of industrial history. The series is presented with NMIH’s Historian and includes behind-the-scenes looks at special collection items, artifacts, and aspects of the museum generally out of the public eye.
